I am 100% cconfident that you did not encounter an Asian Giant Hornet. This Hornet hasn't even made it's way to UK yet. Although it is in the Hymenoptera family, it is not a bee. If you cannot find the insect in any book, find a local Apiarist(beekeeper) and I'm sure they can help you identify this predator. They are very familiar of all predators of bees. Otherwise contact, the state dept of Agriculture or a conservation agent. Live traps are set in every state at specific times of the year to focus on capturing any exotic or new invasive species.

Contact your county agriculture department, and/or university ag extension agent. See link if you want to check against some photos.
