The question translates from "English" into "mathematics" like this:

When 4w = 4 + w, what is 3w?

From there, you solve for "w" with the first equation, like this:

4w = 4 + w
4w - w = 4
3w = 4

Thus, you don't even have to solve all the way for "w" because the problem solving gives you the answer to the second part, which is what is 3w? It's "4".

Hope it helps!

the number w is multiplied by 4:
4w

the result is the same as when 4 is added to w:
4 + w

4w = w + 4
3w = 4
w = 4/3

3(4/3) = 4

so the value of 3w is 4
