I agree with most of what nosoop said, although keeping tiger barbs with cichlids like the severums or nicaraguense would be just fine. Tiger barbs are really not that aggressive, it's just that most people keep them in too small of groups, causing the barbs to get nippy. Exodon tetras on the other hand are very aggressive schoolers and should only go in huge tanks and can often must be kept in a species only tank. Piranhas and gars are another aggressive schooling fish.

Tiger Barbs are aggressive schoolers and so are fish like certain Tetras (Serpae) that are very nippy... Just because they are aggressive though, doesn't mean they can be kept with aggressive fish. In general, don't keep Tiger Barbs with Cichlids... For more info on Tiger Barbs, check out fishless cycling.com or just use the link in my profile.

EDIT: Blackskirt Tetras are not aggressive. Blue Tetras are Whiteskirt Tetras (a color variation of Blackskirts) that has been injected with dye, which is cruel. Blue Tetras have the same aggression level (in general) as Blackskirts and Whiteskirts.

Tiger Barbs are considered semi-aggressive because they are fin nippers when kept in small groups. Increasing the size of the shoal reduces the fin nipping. Serpae Tetras are like the Tiger Barbs.

Demasoni Cichlids are small lake Malawi Cichlids that are aggressive but like to live in groups. They do best when kept in groups of 6 to 10.

Tiger Barbs are considered semi-aggressive because they tend to nip at the fins of other larger, slow moving fish. For a selection of aggressive schooling fish, check out the link below:

For those who have ponds - Golden Orfes or Blue Orfes are schooling fish that may be a tad agreesive, but only towards smaller fish.

So if you're having a problem with minnows or lots of baby minnows or any kind of baby fish, get some Orfes and they'll take care of the excess baby population for you.

Orfes are schooling fish and must be purchased in groups of at least 3 fish - though at least 4 fish are recommended. If you only buy 2 fish, they will sicken and die because they cannot "school"

I don't know must about regular "aquarium" fish, but I have a pond, and I know about ponds.

good luck,

Ken
