Basically what I am asking: Is it a dump?

Houston is family friendly, but I wouldn't call it bike friendly. Houston is a sprawling city with major highways going through it in all directions. What that means for the average citizen is a 25 commute into the city from the suburbs. While the actual city- midtown/downtown is undergoing tons of wonderful renovations, most people I know wouldn't actually raise a family there (though it would be great for singles or married couples). As for the dump part- well, like most cities there are good parts & bad parts- the thing about Houston, though, is that sometimes these areas are intermingled and one wrong turn can put you in the ghetto. If you do decide to move to Houston just stay away from the SW side- it's a cesspit (and the East side isn't much better).

No Houston is not a dump. But... It is like most big cities. There are areas that are horrible and areas that are wonderful. The suburbs are just fine with quality schools and reasonable amenities. You could do much worse. Good luck.
