I've been using sanitary pads since my first period, and I know from experience that it leaks quite often. I'm afraid of using a tampon, fearing that it may slip out and I may leak in public, or that it may be painful when inserting it, or that it just won't be strong enough. My menstruation is quite heavy, but only on the first day.

Once you get the hang of using tampons, I can assure you that it won't "slip out". If you're worried about leaks, you can use a tampon AND a sanitary pad or a pantyliner for extra security!

If you don't like the "leaking" that happens with sanitary napkins, use a tampon. Whatever brand you buy comes with instructions on the box about how to insert them. I'm usually heavy the first day and a half and use the super ones, then I switch to regular sized. When you insert them correctly, they won't slip out and they won't be uncomfortable either. Also, you can use a pad or panti-liner with a tampon for even more protection and peace of mind. Remember to change them out every 2 to 3 hours as well. Having an adult female you trust (Mom, aunt, sister, grandmother, friend) to help you is not a bad idea if it's your first time using a tampon. Never be afraid to ask for help, because believe me, all women went through your same predicament at one time or another!

I didn't start using tampons until after I lost my virginity. I've never had a problem with it slipping out, but have experienced alittle pain inserting it. I buy the tampons with the plastic aplicator, and to help it go in easier I found that running alittle warm water over it first helps alot. The tampon itself doesn't get wet really, just the aplicator. Even though it's plastic it still hurts a bit going in. As far a leakage goes, use a panty liner along with the tampon. I personally use two liners with the tampon for extra security, because my periods are usually very heavy for the first few days. I hope this helps.

i normally use pads just because i think they are easier to deal with. i've used tampons though and they dont really hurt if u do it right and u get the right ones. and no they dont slip out and if u get the kind for the type of periods u have then u should be protected when u wear one. and if it makes u more comfortable u can wear a tampon and a pad. i've done that before because when i first used a tampon i was scared it wouldn't work. talk to your mom or an adult woman u trust about it. or your doctor too. good luck.

I use tampons, I was scared for the same reasons at first, it doesn't hurt and mine have never fallen out, I have had my period for about 3 years, and have been using tampons for about 2 years. I am the same as you, I am very heavy the first day or two and them I'm normal if not very light. So I buy the boxes of tampons that have the 3 different sizes. Super, regular and lite. I used the super the first two days, once a day, and then the regular the rest of my period. I rarely use the lites, but it's cheaper than buying two boxes and two different sizes. Good luck!

Just use the tampons as the instructions say and you will have no trouble. Tampons I think are more sanitary than a pad anyway and they work much better than you think, you will get used to them, but they will be uncomfortable the first time just make sure to read the directions!

The tampon may hurt a little the first few times, but after you get the hang of it, it will be fine and it won't fall out. If you are really heavy the first day (I am too) then I would suggest changing your tampon every 2 to 3 hours and wearing a pantyliner as a backup. You should be fine then. :)

my periods used to be really heavy too. I would end up using both a tampon and a pad.

The first time I tried using a tampon, I started having symptoms of toxic shock. I didn't try again until a couple years later and then it didn't happen.

What I would suggest doing is changing it every 2 hours, if you do decide to go through with using tampons. I'd also recommend the "gentle glide" as they seemed to be more absorbent and easier to use.

Use tampons. You can do anything with a tampon and it doesn't feel like lugging a big stinky diaper around. On the first, heavy day, use a tampon and a panty liner just to be sure no leaking.

I usually use pads the first 2 days of my period
when it's heavy, but then switch to tampons after that
because I know it won't leak.

I've never heard of a tampon slipping out,
so don't worry about that.
tampons usually feel a little uncomfortable the first
few times you use it, but you'll get use to it and not
feel it at all anymore
