right before mating, females will close their fins, which means that their fins get close to their body instead of out like regular swimming.

They will bare up verticaly, if horzontal than those are fear stripes and breeding probably wont happen.

Also you will notice that her head will be slight down, and she will be swimming in a S pattern.

So will take a hit or two from the male and swim like this under the nest.

That is what we call a submission dance and then the male will usually get the hint and breeding will occur.

You can see pictures on my betta site http://www.bcaquatics.com

The female's belly will be swollen with eggs and you might see the white egg spot. She will have verticle stripes when it's time. Horizontal stripes mean the fish is stressed out.
The male will build a bubble nest for the eggs. He is a good indicator - once you see the nest, check the female out to see if you can see her egg spot.

This website has some pretty good pictures. It might be helpful to seperate them using a hurricane glass until you are sure that the female is ready.

Normally they look like any other bettas but the ones that are really ready pack a six back of Canadian beer.

They build big bubble nests in their tanks. They do that when they are ready. I wouldn't introduce a male until they are doing that, and if I did, I'd stay right there with a net incase the male tries to kill her.
