It's not that I can't "stand" southern accents; it's that I can't "understand" them. Unless I have a few minutes to adjust mentally.
But as for understanding accents, the worst ones I've ever encountered are the ones from the British or Scottish.
It's like they aren't even speaking English!
And they sure don't pronounce it according to the dictionary either. The "r's" are "a's" and vice versa. Australian accents, by contrast, aren't difficult to get used to or to understand.
Well, we all have our affectations. I'm Canadian, and at times I say "eh". We just tack it on to a sentence here and there, to make sure the other person is listening and following us in the conversation.

I've never heard a Southern accent that sounds like how they talk in movies. Have you met many southerners?
I think probably the worst accent to a southerner is a northeast accent. Like nails on a chalkboard! Yeck!

I find it amazing how ignorant people from the south are about southern culture. It is very diverse. Southern accents vary greatly. It sure is a lot better than a New York or Minnesota accent.

No, it`s not just you.
I lived in NC for a while and actually started to pick it up! That`s when I knew I had to get outta there!
But the fact is that everyone has an accent and there is always someone out there who makes fun of it.

I am southern with only a slight southern accent. I don't like the Yankee accent, myself. They talk funny.

There are many S accents. Why do you hate them as a group? I, myself, think the prettiest one is from S.Carolina. Listen to the way people from all over the world speak, try not to hate.

No, you're not. I'm Southern actually, but I don't have a drawl. I think heavy drawls sound very uneducated. I do say y'all but everyone asks me where I'm from. I can't even listen to Lynard Skynard I hate overly strong southern accents so much
