Maybe we're trying to make an impression where we feel an impression can still be made.

Those who are close to us tend to be more often exposed to the rage of our mutual misunderstandings, specially because they hold us and are held to a higher standard, and are around us more often.
Those who are not so close or "so worthy", sometimes are believed to be "worthy" just when impressing the new comers seems needed! Those close to us very seldom need our exercise in convincing that we are "worthy" being close to, because they already are close. As social animals we feel a need to expand our social environment and allocate our energies on new gains more often than mantaining the ones we have. To make new friends. To be considered a better friend than the next guy/girl.
There is a variety of human emotions which are misunderstood both by the holders as well as the beholders of such emotions. Not only actual misunderstanding of issues/emotions themselves, but misunderstandings in the communication of the issues/emotions can bring conflicts or the momentary appearance of worthiness.

Wow the complexity on so many levels.
For starters, we hurt the ones we love because deep down inside there might be the slightest bit of animosity towards the people you know inside and out. But we give the ones that are worthy the benefit of the doubt because they complete us.
For, example you might have a average mother yet you will not go out of your way for her in the same respect that you would for a cheating lover.
Tainted Love.

Good question. I ask myself that every day when I am kissing the rears of the customers that are screaming and cussing at me (I work at a call center for a bank so there is always some kind of fee). I do make sure I tell my husband my feelings for him often though (at least 3 times a day). I never want to take out my bad day on someone I love.

Why do we do such stupid things? I don't know.
Maybe we hurt people we love...but it's really ourselves we're hurting? Because we're insecure, or trying to prove a point? Because we never appreciate what we've got?
maybe we go out of our way for the unworthy because we're trying to project an image of ourselves that shows us in a better light? if so, then why don't we just act like decent human beings to those we love? Maybe we go out of our way for the unworthy because we're trying to make it up to the ones we've hurt... but I don't see how helping somebody we don't know is better than apologizing to the bf you dissed.... but our sick, primitive human brains somehow connect the two... if you ever figure it out, let me know!

Lol. If you ask someone "what would make you kill" which is against their morals, they would likely say for themselves and loved ones. They are/would break their MORALS for them!
Also i think your verry prejudice about "those who aren't worthy" and as such, i am going to type a quote i like that pertains to this:
You often say, "I would give, but only to the deserving."
And who are you that men should rend their bosom and unveil their pride, that you should see their worth naked and their pride unabashed?
(Khalil Gibran)
And also: "If your willingness to give blessings is limited, so also is your ability to receive them" -Hua Hu Ching

Good question! I think because the ones we love can always forgive us, but we are trying to make another person happy, regardless if they feel the same.

we take the ones we love for granted and figure they already know us and love us - we don't have to impress them anymore
we go out of our way for others to make ourselves feel as if we are desired and wanted by others - to build our self esteem
