Most would say the wheel but I think the telegraph because all forms of communication were formed from that invention. It opened the door to the telephone and then to the radio, television, cell phones and computers. At least that is the way I see it.

The best single invention of all time is the modern, indoor toilet.
Before this was invented, people had to go outdoors to an outhouse (or worse) to take care of their business. After, they could just go to the bathroom.
In a single stroke, it made life infinitely more convenient.

The telephone.
I think it is the most used invention. Without telephones communication would be much more difficult and it would take a lot longer to get a message to someone.

Well my Mom believed it was the frostless refrigerator.
She hated getting Dad to haul ice. My grandmother would probably say the automatic washing machine, wringing by hand was a pain.
I really think a dryer is best, drying clothes rain or shine is really incredible to older relations. :-)
