i know that males have a y chromosome but is it inherited from the mother or the father?

In humans, females are XX and males are XY.
Mom only has an X to give.
Dad gives either an X or a Y (half his sperm are X sperm and half are Y sperm).

Y chromosomes are always inherited from the father. The phenotype of the mother is XX and the phenotype of the father is XY. So therefore, in order to get a Y chromosome it MUST come from the father as the mother has no Y chromosome to donate!

Females have double X chromosomes, they have no Y chromosomes.

So the X can only come from the male.
