I weighed 190 pounds at my peak weight, and have now slimmed down to 135. I look and feel great, but there's an extra bonus I didn't expect. People treat me a million times better now that I'm thin, make eye contact more, and make an effort to be friendly. I was pretty much ignored when I was overweight, and people definitely were a lot ruder. I can't imagine what it's like for obese people, given what a huge difference I notice going from slightly overweight to thin. Do you think prejudice against fat people is a problem, or is it not that big a deal?

When ANY group of people is judged and then treated poorly, it is a problem. Sizism is definitely there and has been shown time and again by some slim person putting on a fat suit and going out with cameras to show how they are treated. I guess all people face some kind of prejudice for one reason or another. I can't change the world. I can only change my actions and reactions to those in the world. I let people think what they want to.

Yes, absolutely, unfortunately. As you have experienced yourself personally, people do treat you differently when you look a certain way. The prejudice could extend to anything that puts people "outside the box" where people are comfortable, as in size, color of skin, etc., etc. I will admit that when I was younger, I just couldn't understand how someone could let themselves get heavy. And guess what? Now I am getting older and my weight IS becoming a problem and it is getting harder and harder to keep it in check. And yes, people do treat me differently than they used to when I was thinner. I'm still me. Everyone needs to realize that no one knows what is behind someone carrying excess weight - if they have a medical/physical/emotional, etc. problem, on some kind of medication, or like me, going through menopause and experiencing that lovely weight gain as a side effect. I really wish that we all, as a part of the human race, would realize that we are all the same on the inside - we all laugh, cry, hurt, have dreams, and everything else that makes us human beings. One last word to all of you "perfect people" (or so you think): One day your looks WILL change, and then you could be on the receiving end of someone's prejudice. Isn't that enough to make you want to treat each other now the way you would like to be treated then?

It is a BIG problem! (no pun intended) Seriously, though, I am overweight and I notice that people treat me like dirt! I get less job opportunities and the best job I got was one where the employer didn't see me before he hired me. I don't think he would have hired me otherwise. Where do people get off thinking that losing 60 pounds makes you different or even a better worker? It doesn't!!! But good for you, honey! Keep up the good work! I've tried so many times to lose weight, it's discouraging!

i think it is a problem since some people are prejudiced and act really in offensive ways towards them. not only towards fat people, but anyone who is slightly "different" than rest of the community. as a result some people try to lose weight not for health reasons but to please others. i think it is really a problem since people even try extreme diets and other methods to get thinner and be "acceptable".

but i think in your case there is some chance that you might have had a problem with your own weight more than others had. dont get me wrong, im just sayin that people might not be treating you that differently. maybe some things were coincidental. or maybe you feel more confident now and that might change people's attitudes about you.

I do not like any sort of prejudice! I think you should be friends with all...It is an issue even if you are thin...If I am in public and see someone mistreating a person because of their weight, health or color I fly off the handle and give them a piece of my mind...

I can't truly comment, since I'm not overweight, but I will say this: I think it's unfair for fat people to take up half my seat on an airplane. They should have to buy two seats. I also think it's unfair for obesity to be declared a legal "disability" -- since weight is a controllable factor. And it's unfair for fat people to sue McDonald's for their obesity when it's THEIR OWN FAULT.

Otherwise, I agree with your implication that it's cruel to be mean to fat people. I have deliberately been extra-friendly to many heavy, unattractive women b/c I think they deserve friendship and also it's not fair that men tend to mollycoddle attractive women.

Predudice is not only focused against fat people but old people, teens , children, poor people, people of all colours and anyone else you can name. We are living in a society that does not like or accept anyone except the ones on their own little island of hate and mistrust. I wish it were different but it is a fact of life.

i think of the jury is in: it is not possibly prejudice, yet someone-friendly experience loathing of what the obese individual has strengthen into, which no one needs to share or be. yet this person-friendly aversion is according to some misconceptions, as are the conduct of the obese besides. there are various countries the place obesity is uncommon, and it is not completely genetic. carry an identical people over right here and in the event that they undertake our techniques, they get fat like the rest persons. the clarification is that our commonly used existence type makes us fat. it is not in simple terms a individual's very own conduct. right it is a prescription for obesity... >rigidity - distinctive it right here. motives weight benefit and overeating. >comfortable jobs - we've sent the actual stuff someplace else. >Sedentary entertainment - No energy burned. >2 autos for each individual - 'nuff reported. >starvation weight-reduction plan - will advance urge for food and converts carbs to fat speedier. >severe exercising - same as above. >loss of time for prolonged, average actual pastime - Fails to advance metabolism. >loss of time to savor food - velocity ingesting gets extra food in earlier physique is familiar with it is finished. >extra beneficial food - as quickly as potential is replenished, the rest turns to fat. >Fewer small food -average snacking does not do the above, if it is all you have and you're lively. >Sugar, fat, salt, and ingredients in each and every thing - want I say extra? All those products produces sickness, even extending to organ failure, which makes the difficulty worse. We weren't made for the international we've made. Too previous through place the genie back interior the bottle, so the transformations will could be very own. extra weight will make you ill in case you do not shield it now. forget approximately what people think of. think of approximately your self. My suggestion to the obsese: verify the above record, handle the products one by using one, and tutor actual everyone something to have self assurance in. definite, for some people it is person-friendly (it is going to likely be for you too, in case you persist with it). For now, you will get extra admire once you do something that seems stressful. do not provide up... It takes time.

This is an important question and needs to be asked. Equally important for you to consider is:
Do you make more eye contact now that you are more confident?
Do you smile more now that you feel better, and hence encourage more friendly treatment?

I think it's good, it's a reason for fat people to lose weight. While for some it can make them very depressed, I've seen a lot of people that have lost weight because of it and now they are really healthy.
