Even though they are technically "classic rock" I think the Ramones were very much ahead of their time. Here's a band that were together for over 20 years without any radio play. Now people have finally realized how important they were and I'm always seeing these little kids with Ramones T-shirts on.

if you want something different, there's Amy Winehouse and Regina Spektor and Ani DiFranco's still around. There's still SOME uniqueness out there, but it is very few and far between.
