Eyeshadow is safe for about 1-3 years. Click here for more information: http://beauty.about.com/od/makeuptrickstips/a/shelflife.htm

Unlike diamonds, makeup is not forever. It expires.

Yes, it is true. Those expiration dates on cosmetics are not a marketing ploy to get you to buy more mascara when you can still scrape some gunk out of your old tube.

It’s a safety issue, especially with eye makeup. Every time you swash on mascara and dip the brush back into the tube, you transfer bacteria from your eyes to the tube, where it will make baby bacteria that you will then reapply to your eyes the next day. It’s an ugly, ugly cycle of life.

You wouldn’t eat food past its expiration date, would you? (Husbands would, but would you?) Don’t wear cosmetics past their prime, either.

Most cosmetics are formulated to have a shelf life of one to three years when stored according to directions. Products that have been exposed to high temperatures or sunlight may not last that long.

Here’s how long specific cosmetics can usually be stored. Start counting when you open the container. Since you’ll never remember or be able to keep up with everything, write the expiration date (calculated from the time you opened the container) on the bottle with a permanent marker.

• Mascara: 3 months

• Cleanser: 6 months

• Eye shadow: 6 months

• Foundation: 6 months

• Moisturizer: 6 months

• Concealer: 6 to 8 months

• Blush: 6 to 12 months

• Lipstick and gloss: 1 year

• Powder: 1 year

• Toner: 1 year

• Nail polish: 2 years

• Applicator sponges and brushes: toss disposable ones and wash others regularly.

Keep makeup containers tightly closed and store them at room temperature. Toss anything that looks or smells bad. Yuck.

Bear in mind that natural cosmetics, and those that have no preservatives, may expire sooner than others. You should never add water or (worse!) saliva to thin out a foundation or other cosmetic. Do not return unused foundation to the container. Discard if you accidentally pour out too much. Do not share cosmetics. (Similarly, avoid testers in department stores.)

Believe it or not, I've had some eyeshadows (the kind in a little jar)for over 25 years! It's the kind that u only use a tiny bit of, and I don't wear them often. Its been fine for me. It doesn't go anywhere near an eyeduct it goes on the lid only. Never had a problem. And I've had regular shadows for years and just changed the sponge brushes it came with. Also no problem. I keep them all in a makeup bag, in a dry environment. I really doubt there's an issue here.

Most makeup should have a sell-by or use-by date. Anything from 6 months to 2 years normally. Although I can't imagine what eyeshadow can do if it does' go off'. After all, mascara and lip gloss dries up, but the most I can see powders doing is just becoming cakey or brittle. Not the end of the world :D

I would say they should be thrown out every 3 to 5 months considering how often you use it! Mascara is different...throw it away after 1 to 2 months because of bacteria buildup, you can get sties really badly from old eye makeup. Eye pencils are different tho...they can be sharpened and less contaminated in that fashion.

The industry standard is 3 months. I say change your mascara every 3 mo, your eyeliner and eye shadow - once a year.

Anything that you put around your eyes and on your skin will grow bacteria. So if you haven't used a product in about 2 months then trash it

Make up can become contaminated with bacteria and since you are putting it near your eye, it should be replaced around every 6 months.

It depends on what type they are but it won't kill you if you use old eye shadow. As long as you keep them covered than they should be fine. You would probably use it all before then anyway!=D
Hope this helps
