The reason the distance races in Mexico City were slow is because of the altitude not the pollution. In fact the long jump and 400 meters records were set in Mexico City and stood for almost 30 years. There was a lot of pollution in Athens, but did not seem to affect the athletes. It is the heat and humidity that is of greatest concern.

Mexico city has a high altitude and in the explosive sprinting events world records were broken. To get to your point there are a lot of mayor cities where smog is prevalent, Los Angeles to mention one and I don't think anyone really cares about the athletes, its all about the money and sports will take a back step to promoting and big noting themselves.

Yes the pollution looks to be a major factor, but I think that the athletes will over come this problem when they go early and practice.. they will be able to acclimate themselves to the the situation.

Can you believe 1000 new cars gets added to the population every day, that's almost unbelievable..my and we wonder why we don't have enough gas to accommodate the whole world.
