I was 10 minutes late. I didn't want to give a list of excuses but now I think I blew my chances for the job. I know it is over and done with now but what should I have said or done???

I think you did the right thing by not giving excuses. In a situation like that it's really just best to sincerely apologize and then give a killer interview and prove to them that you deserve to be there.

If you didn't call while you were on your way being late, then it won't matter what excuse you give, so don't. With cell phones and (germ infested) public phones, there's no excuse for being late for an interview without making someone aware. In the future, always keep the contact name and phone# available in your route to an interview. Calling at least 15 minutes prior to let them know of your tardiness is acceptable.

Well for a job interview, if you know you are going to be late, you have to call them and say so. If you don't then you need to apologize and accept full responsibility for being late. Also after an interview, it's always good style to send a thank you note to the interviewer.

The best possible thing to do is just be honest..... NOT.

call the employer and let them know that you have a flat tire. I always thought this was the best excuse because the employer can't prove that you have a flat tire and they can't request documentation that you have a flat. never say you were in an accident for they will want police reports.

it also helps if you have an excuse rolodex.

use excuse that sound believeable, flat tire, power outage, police road block has worked for me too,

i was late for work one day and i told my employer that the police had a road block set up and were checking cars for valid insurance, once again, no documentation required.

good luck!!

Honestly, there really is no way to recover. If someone is late when I am giving an interview, I am most likely going to say no. If you can't be on time for an interview I doubt you will be on time for work. Leave and hour early and shop around if you have to, but be on time.

Why didn't you call and say you will be a few minutes late?

If they really need a body, they may hire you anyway. I used to be a restaurant manager about 15 years ago and dealt with that problem all the time. Deep down inside, I knew I couldn't always depend on people given the poor wages we paid our employees.

Just be honest and apologize sincerely once. Don't spend the whole time maing excuses, feeling guilty and apologizing. Just do it once and move on. And don't be late the next time.

maybe apologize profusely and really explain why you were late. i think if you show the interviewer that you are sincerely sorry it would still mean you had a chance..

send a card thanking them for the interview. and then appologize and assume you will get a second interview and assure them you will not be late for that one.
