I'm visiting Austin to check out the University of Texas for grad school. Is it easy to get around in terms of transportation? I've seen pictures of Austin, but basically I'm clueless about what the area is like. I'm used to New York City life so what is it like down there compared to the city? I'm staying right near the university, can I just walk around to get to places really easily like a smaller city or is everything spaced out really far?

If you want New York, stay there, because Austin isn't that. The "drag" area. (campus area), will be great in terms of walking to everything you need. However. If you want to go to Nordstrom and pick out a new bag, you are going to be traveling for quite some time. You can do a lot more with a bike.

There is a central area and area around the University where you can live without a car. There is a decent bus system and the University shuttles are pretty good. However, nicer and less expensive apartments/houses are further out and they will require a car, both to get to school and to do things like go shoping.

I moved here to attend grad school 16 years ago and never left. It is a great place to be.

ITS AWESOME too... theyre are lots of places to hang out at and the metro bus system is one of the best in the nation...and you should be able to get everywhere you need to w/ ease...also lots of austinites are vegans so many places sell organic foods... and biking is getting bigger by the day! town lake or ladybird lake as it was just renamed has lots of hike and bike trails and has a disc golf course too...theres tons of live music throughout austin and ACL and SXSW are the ****!

And in case you come back to Austin, you're able to eat at Hill's Cafe on South Congress. terrific Texas domicile-cooking on the city.

You should be able to walk to most places on campus but the busses are decent. Waaayyy more laid back than NYC and yes, more spaced out (in more ways than one!!)
