Actually, federal law regulates how many hours truck drivers are allowed to drive. They face VERY heavy penalties and possibly jail time if they are caught driving more than they should. If I'm not mistaken the most they can ever drive is 10 hours with breaks. To stay awake for 10 hours a good night sleep is all that's needed.

Other than drugs along the lines of caffeine there really is no other way to keep the body awake. It is both unhealthy and very dangerous, especially so behind the wheel because reaction times suffer and also concentration. No responsible driver will resort to such measures.

I am not a trucker.

I imagine they
* Get a good nite sleep
* Do not drive more hours than the law allows
* Exercise regularly so that they are in good physical condition, instead of relying on stimulants like other people
* Know when they are getting tired, and pull over to get some rest instead of risking falling asleep behind the wheel
* Talk on CB radio with other people (interesting discussions keep them alert)

Fishbone is right about DOT regulations on how many hours a driver can be behind the wheel. These days it isn't easy for a driver to make a living and stay legal.

Coffee, sodas, tobacco, food, and caffeine tablets are the standards, with the occasional wild child popping go-go pills. CB radios are also a big help to staying awake.
