First, energy can be converted into matter in certain circumstance and matter can be converted into energy also. In fact, in a nuclear bomb, matter is converted into energy. In the atomic bomb that exploded over Hiroshima, about a gram of matter was converted into energy.
However, is is true that mass/energy is conserved. In other words, if you add up the amount of energy and the enrgy associated with mass, this will be the same at one time as at any other. To be absolutely rigorous, there are corrections that have to be made because of curvature effects of spacetime and strictly speaking, the conservation is local, not global.
I think part of your problem is that you fail to realize that time is part of the universe and conservation laws only say that some quantity at one time is the same as at another time. But if time is part of the universe, it began with the universe, so there is no time before the universe! Equally, there would be no time after the universe either.
This means that energy (and mass) are not eternal, except in the narrow sense that they are not created nor destroyed in time in the universe.

energy was and always was here. supposedly, when the big bang happened, energy was here first, and created the first matter.
i dont know where the confusion in this question arises, because the matter that was created is converted into energy using E=mc^2
energy definitely existed before the universe, otherwise the universe couldn't have formed. how else does an infinitely hot and infinitely dense object explode into everything we know of today?
in case you wonder what existed before the universe, the answer is everything. the universe consisted of perfect vacuum (total absence of energy or matter) and a singularity, which contained all the energy of the universe. energy was used in the first seconds to create matter, and now matter is being used by the stars to make energy. i believe that the unstable nature (it had to be unstable to collapse) lead to the creation of dark energy, which powers the expansion of the universe even today.

Science tells us that all of the energy that exist today appeared in a singularity about 13 billion years ago. Energy can't be destroyed or created in way that alters the net amount of energy in the universe. However, energy can become so weak that it has no practical use. The light from stars is energy but there is no way to use it.

Light energies can be created with a flash light.

When our Creator constructed the Universe ,He created the space structure which holds the power to cause all motion, and cause masses to stay into a strucure.
When a mass structure moves, it it said to have energy.
Therefore ;God created the energy process as well as light,and other micromasses which integrates the Universe as a mass structure having a particular designed architecture.
The mass content of the Universe is finite and so is its energy content.
It is so very simple to Understand that even our teachers couldnt explain it any better.
