seniority,attendance,work ethic and quality. it is not always the case though,butt kissers tend to get ahead in business regardless of those other factors.

Typically a company uses a combination of reverse seniority and who can take over the work.
Reverse seniority means ... suppose they hired Tom, then Dick, then Harry ... well they will probably let Harry go first, unless Harry is doing a much better job performance than Tom or Dick.
Sometimes when the work of 2 people in a department is about the same quality, they let go the person who is making the most money because they been there longer, and got more raises.
Sometimes one person gets promoted, then fires people not liked by that person.
Sometimes there are a dozen job skills to get the job done, so people are let go in such a way that the company keeps the job skills needed, in the people who were not let go.

In theory, things like seniority, job performance, job knowledge, essential services, should be deciding factors. In practice, this gets shaded, or even downright warped by other factors:
The factors of time (how much time the deciding person can spend on determining who to lay off), material (what can be done without, employee-wise), money (who is getting paid the most, regardless of reason), and span of control (your boss is in Denver, you are in Dublin, and the folks that get laid off are all in Dublin) all exert greater force than they should in an ideal world.

A common method is seniority. That means the last person hired is the first person let go. One advantage of this method is it is easy. The only decision is how many people to let go. It also prevents accusations of discrimination.
I personally prefer making all firing decisions based on performance. This requires evaluating each employee and keeping those that are most productive.

They usually get rid of the dead wood first & then the costlier emplyees. Then reverse seniority.
