My fish went under the filter in our 2.5 gallon fish tank and got stuck. Once we got it free we found its tail was ripped really bad. What do I do? It can barely swim at all and only moves to eat. We can't move the filter up or down so it can't get under it. It's one of those goldfishes with the flared tails.

The only thing you can do is putting salt in there, 1 tablespoon to 5 gallons
By the way a MINIMUM tank for a goldfish is 10 gallon
Here is a link that explains basic goldfish keeping

Hope that helps
good luck

Well, fins will repair themselves, but it takes time, and then again, because it's a tear vs. a complete missing section, it may not grow back, but there is nothing you can do to fix the tail. I'm sure, as far as how the fish is now acting, it's just stressed from the ordeal. It may just calm down on its own and then again, it may incur some other disease from the stress. You could choose to add some salt to the tank to relieve stress and help heal the fin. Use aquarium salt, rock salt, kosher salt or any non-iodized salt in the amounts of 1 tsp per 1 gallon of water. Pre-dissolve in a cup of water and then mix well into your aquarium. FYI: a goldy really, really needs to be in at least a 10 gallon tank. That 2.5 is too, too teeny for a goldfish. Good luck with your baby!
