Because the NCAA has not decided to put one in place. The BCS was intended to at least help, but it's turned out to be mainly a joke.
I think the real problem with a football playoff system is that it would add too many weeks to the season. Even if it was just the top 8 teams, you're talking about 3 more weeks of games. And if you did start a playoff with the top 8 teams, how do you select which teams go? Is it simply a matter of taking 1-8 in the coach's poll or some other poll?
Also, I think a true playoff system would minimize all the bowl games and those bowl games are major money generators.

It comes down to the money that the bowl system generates for the power conferences. The Big 10 can send seven teams to bowl games and receive seven paydays split among the teams. A playoff would probably include 16 teams and the Big 10 would at most get three. Also, the payout would not be as big because there woudl not be a game sponsor like Tostitos or whomever.
Basically, there is way too much money tied into the bowl system. But I agree with you there should be some type of playoff.

The Tostito's Fiesta Bowl last year paid at $16 Million dollars for the championship game.. Florida won so I "think" 60% of that went to the general college funds in the SEC.. which is about 9 million.. that 12 ways is $750,000 each.. LSU, Auburn, even Alabama went to bowls last year.. granted they didn't all win and not all of them paid large (3 did) so figure maybe $3 Million each.. that's payday and it's for the "General College Fund" so it goes directly to the presidents office and not the Athletic Dept. so guess who votes on playoffs? College Presidents.. Bowls don't want a play off so theres a yearly payoff.. completely crooked and completely trash.. College ball needs a playoff

There will NEVER be a playoff system in NCAA football. There is a quarter billion dollars in Bowl revenue. Do you think the Bowl people are going to let that get away?

Because the BCS paid college football and the NCAA a lot of money to use their way of determining a national championship. Based upon the fact there are 119 DIV 1A in college football, there is no good way of giving each of these teams a fair shake at a national title.

Because it would ruin college football. What makes college football great is that every game counts, not just a couple at the end.Take the Ohio state Michigan game for example. If you have a play off, that game would be between the third teamers because both teams would be resting starters for the play offs.

Beause there is to much money and tradition involved in the bowl system. If they had a playoff system many think that it would take away from that. I am torn between them, I love the traditional bowl games, but I also see the flaws in the current system...what do we do ....what do we do....

no freaking time, football has to be played during certain times of the year and college kids aren't at school during summer
and bowl games get $ for colleges, if you haven't noticed, colleges only really care about $$ and more $
