It is pronounced Shawn but spelled Sean because that is the traditional Celtic spelling. Shawn is the anglicized or North Americanized version. Because for some reason we can't seem to comprehend spelling things differently from how they sound.

I've actually seen it spelled Sean far more often than Shawn. It's Irish in origin, but it is the more prevalent spelling of the name in the US.

I just answered another question regarding the name Sean. I find it amusing that I said that people that didn't know how to pronounce it are morons, and two minutes later I come across this question... Let me reiterate - people that don't know how SEAN is pronounced by grade school (being generous) are idiots.... "Shawn" is an uneducated looking spelling.
