It appears to be part of a growing anti-Scottish sentiment building in England, perpetuated by the right-wing press rumour mill, who are intent on breeding envy and resentment.

It's the old story, tell a lie often enough and loudly enough, and people begin to believe it is the truth.

These rumours should be scotched (ouch!) along with the other myth (LIE !) which has taken on a life of it's own....

Rumour : That English taxes subsidise Scotland, as Scotland is incapable of being or becoming self-financing.

Fact: Scotland contributes 76 billion annually to the UK economy, (that's all tax revenue of various kinds) and receives only 28 billion in return via the Barnett Formula to run Scotland. - who is subsidising who?? That 28 billion is to run our education system, our hospitals, our legal system, patch up our roads, provide care to our elderly, help the universities, give money to all the councils etc, etc.,

Scotland puts more money into the UK economy per capita than any other region or country except London.

Maybe we SHOULD vote for independence and keep the 76 billion? - Now what's 76 billion divided between 5 million people??? Sounds good to me!

The BF provides a public spending per head of:

England £5,940
Scotland £7,346
Wales £6,901
Northern Ireland £7,945

Why does nobody whinge about Northern Ireland – who get more than any of the other countries in the union?

The fact that Scottish Parliament chooses to spend the Barnett Formula pittance it receives on its people: their health, education and their elderly seems to rankle with some English people.

Why don't they campaign for the same levels of funding for these things in England, instead of criticising us Scots?

They could be improving the NHS or education with the remainder of the taxes raised in Scotland, for heavens sake, surely that would put an end to this envy??

Why don't the English people call Westminster to book for their maladministration?

Westminster spent 2 billion just on consultants last year.

They spent more on the car park for Westminster than was spent on the Scottish Parliament building. ...

Now that is worth bitching about......

We get free prescriptions here in Wales because the Welsh Assembly abolished the prescription charge.

Maybe this is why people think its the same in Scotland too.

I think its really unfair FWIW. My partner's English and when his disabled mum (who lives in Kent) came to stay with us for a week after my baby was born, she was taken ill and needed a prescription of the tablets she's dependent on. Because the prescription she had with her was "issued in England" the pharmacist was going to make her pay for it!!!

She got around it by going to see our local GP as an emergency and getting him to wirte another prescription.

It should be the same all over the UK not just for one part.

Possibly because it is free in Wales.

However, the SNP want to abolish prescription charges. Something I want to happen throughout all the UK. (See the second link)

I don't know but I suspect the BNP literature. This BS has been driving me up the wall, especially as I'm disabled but as my partner gets a pension from his previous employer, I have to pay for my medication.
