Let's put it this way.

If Alex Rodriguez had stayed at shortstop for his entire career, as he probably should have, he'd be the best shortstop in history.

He'd replace Honus Wagner.

Wagner had 3,400 hits, eight batting titles, power by dead ball standards (led the league in slugging six times), was considered a good fielder for his time, and was by any standard a model citizen and great teammate. Picture Cal Ripken with more offense, and you have the idea.

Honus Wagner was indeed very good. He was one of the best shortstops to play Major League Baseball. Now, about that card....

He was a good player but that's not why his card is so valuable.

Baseball cards used to come in cigarette packages. The first series ever printed included everyone on Wagner's team, the Pittsburg Pirates. After the first run of the cards, Wagner withdrew his permission because he didn't believe in encouraging people to smoke. So all the other cards were printed again and again, but Wagner's cards were only in that first run. This is why it's the rarest card. Only 50 or 60 are thought to exist, and it's not unusual for them to go for over a million dollars!

If there had been an MVP Award in his time, he'd have won five or six of them.

THAT good.
