The attorney can negotiate alternate amounts as well as an affordable payment structure. This is especially true when the judge awarded an unreasonably high amount of child support. I knew one guy who was paying half his income for a single child which was totally unreasonable. That was the sole reason why he was behind in support. Ultimately, the judge shaved off a lot of what had been owed. In another case, a judge wrongly increased child support based on the father working 2 jobs. He was working the 2nd job because his support payment was so high, he didn't have enough money to live.
These are the only types of instances I can see for having an attorney. Perhaps there are others.

Yes he owes the back child support. But if his circumstances has changed (his income) he can get what is owed currently reduced. Actually he did not need a attorney for this. He could go in court any time and get this amount changed. There are times when I think the adults act more childish than the children.

The government and many groups have done studies and found that women who keep their children from the Father but make demands on the child support have more problems.
Research and statistics show The women who allow visitation and do not interfere with the child having a loving relationship with the Father get the child support money and those Fathers are more prone to give extra toward the child.

chances are that he is either trying to get his child support reduced (which would not happen in my state. they don't change anything until the non-custodial parent is square with the house...) or he is trying to stay out of jail for not paying his child support. in the case of not paying his child support, they would set up a structure for paying what is owed from this point forward, and tacking on an amount to go toward arrears.
