For books, I would suggest The Awakening by Kate Chopin, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neal Hurston, The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck, Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut, Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad, Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, or The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka.
As for poetry, it depends on your own taste, but I quite like Annabel Lee and Eldorado by Edgar Allan Poe, The Road Not Taken and Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening by Robert Frost, Ozymandias and To a Skylark by Percy B Shelley, My Heart Leaps Up by William Wordsworth, Because I Could Not Stop For Death by Emily Dickenson, or The Prologue and The Author to Her Book by Anne Bradstreet.

Try reading Ice Station by Matthew Reilly it will soon be a movie starring George Clooney. For a poem try reading the Ballad of Sam Magee, I forget the author but since it is so well known someone can help you with that. It is funny and serious at the same time. I read it over 50 years ago.

Wuthering Heights is a great book, as is Catch 22. They are both very interesting books with characters that you can relate to. They are also books that a teacher will approve of as they are classics. For poems I recommend Frost or Plath. Two of my favorites, Frost makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside and Plath has a dark aura. Also anything by Edgar Allen Poe, which again is good for you and good for teach. To suck up a little more try some Shakespeare, which are great stories and great poems and the teacher will love you.

Poem - Look at Edgar Alan Poe - The Ravem is a classic, Bells is just fun
Book suggestion - don't know your age or if there are particular books or a list from which you must choose. If you have not read Gone with the Wind, it will impress your teacher and it's a great story and easy to read.

Important books to read, especially if you want to go to college:
Catcher in the Rye (Salinger)
any Ernest Hemingway
Heart of Darkness (Joseph Conrad)
any Kurt Vonnegut (he is GREAT)
1984/Animal Farm (Orwell)
any Shakespeare
As for poetry, choose whatever you alike, but the following poets always appear in textbooks:
Robert Frost
Shakespeare
William Carlos Williams ("The Red Wheelbarrow")
William Wordsworth
also, haiku poetry is really great to read
Don't read any of the more popular books out now (no Harry Potter!). These books can be for fun, but they will not help you out for school and no self respecting English teacher would ever assign them in high school. Plus, they suck.

I think you should maybe read Harry potter but if its to long you could read the books called a series of unfortunate events. Those are pretty good books. I don't really know any poems but you could go to the library and get a book of poems.

I have a few books I recommend for anyone, so here they are: Mario Puzo's THE GODFATHER, Philip Caputo's HORN OF AFRICA (1980s CIA espionage thriller set in Ethiopia), Douglas Adams's THE HITCH HIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY (absolutely hilarious) and Frank Herbert's DUNE (sci-fi epic about two warring families fighting over control of a seemingly desert planet).
If you like murder mysteries, either of my books, MURDER IN EXILE or REDUCED CIRCUMSTANCES will do. You can read sample chapters at my website to get an idea if you'd like to read more.

some of the books sugested by the above posters were good. as for a poem-there is this poem called "We real cool" you might not get credit for it because it is 8 lines long and each line is four words or so, but it is a poem. another poem is called "the Tiger" and is longer and more likely to count.

Try Hocus Pocus by Kurt Vonnegut Jr. He is a great American satirist. For the poem read "The Raven" by Poe.
