I just got contracted to make clothing for a childrens store and I would love to do a "story' line with text from nursury rhymes, the little mermaid, alice and wonderland..etc. But, I do not want to break any copyright laws and get myself sued into all oblivion. Help?

You need to search the copyrights that are held by the gov't. Search under federal gov't. If you find they still exists or you have to pay to use them then be creative and make some characters to use under your own name.

just be sure your images of the "little mermaid" and alice in wonderland are not taken from Disney or other modern illustrators. You have every right to be creative and come up with your own original characters. Lawsuits involve theft of other peoples work, so just avoid doing that. Don't be a copycat.
