Oh yeah! You could install a float switch system. In fact, you could set it up to turn your pump on when the tank was 1/2 full or so, and then turn off when it was full. If you do a three float system, you can even have it alarm when it is empty. It all depends on how you wire it and where you set the floats. Check with, believe it or not, a septic tank company that installs lift stations. They will be able to get you the parts and install it if necessary. Just explain what you want the floats to do.

Bare B gave you a good answer. That's the way we do in industry. Although our systems may be more complicated in cases, a lot of them are just as simple as Bare said. Install one switch were you want the full mark to be, another at the lowest point you want the water to go. The third will be either set at the low alarm point, or even set higher than the full one to give a high level alarm and act as a seperate shut off for the pump, just to be sure that you don't overfill the tank and waste water.

You can use a low voltage for the wiring, 12V will be fine. Just run them to a 12V relay and use the 120V to power the pump. good luck.

A friend of mine put a clear sight glass on the outside of his tank. Just tee-in at the bottom outlet of the tank and run a clear one inch piece of ridgid tubing straight up the outside of the tank. You can put 180 degree bend in the top to ward off contamination and a screen over the end of that. Water always levels itself out, so the water in the sight glass will be even with the level of the tank. Cheap fix for monitoring, but the float deal as stated by others would be more automated.
