There is considerable debate, but some scientists - including Stephen Hawking - say that it is possible to do this. However, this is highly theoretical, requiring a certain number of extra dimensions under string theory. According to this theory, a singularity could be created in a particle accelerator; it would have a mass of several protons and would evaporate instantly due to Hawking radiation. If this theory is true, then these microscopic black holes are being formed at this very instant in the upper atmosphere as the result of cosmic rays smashing into molecules of Earth's atmosphere. These mini black holes pose no threat to Earth; if they do exist, they evaporate before they can consume any nearby matter.
