Is their age difference or sex life pertinent to their qualifications to govern...or anybody's business? Is the number of marriages and divorces a window into their character or morals? What about their religious preference? Or, should we be just talking issues?.......(Too many questions, I know, but I'm trying to hear both sides in a condensed way.)

I think you can learn a lot about a person's character by looking at their past and personal life. I do believe however, that there is too much weight placed on the information. What does something someone did years ago in college or as a teen have to do with what they are capable of now? Did they do something stupid and learn from it? Or did they continue the same behavior? That, to me, would be the main importance of knowing what their background is. Not necessarily what they did, but how they handled it afterward.

For Congress you can argue the their positions on issues is all that matters, but the president has enormous power to act independently and in secret, so it is important to know about their temperament, judgment, beliefs and character as well as their positions on issues. Since the public life of politicians is orchestrated to project an image, it is from their private life that we gain the most insight. We should keep in mind that everyone has flaws and it is the whole person that counts and not concentrate on juicy tidbits.

For the most part, that's against human nature. When two sides of the opposition are as strong as they are, it tends to get down and dirty. That's politics. :)

Of course the press doesn't help much either. I have noticed though that things have gotten much worse since we're able to access so many things on line.

I have wondered this myself... Issues seems the way to go to me, but if the answers I see here on YA are any indication of how people feel... We judge them by how they dress, what they look like, how much their hair cuts cost, and not much else.

I think we should. Otherwise, some will use these past scandals to undermine the authority of the President, and prevent him from leading the country effectively.

morals matter to me if thats what they preach or try to influence thru legislation. If a guy says your bedroom your business and doesnt try to legislate sexual behavior I could care less what he does in his spare time.
