I agree with the first person that answered. If you have a nice condo in a good downtown location near where you work, one could be OK without a car. Or if retired and rich you could live near downtown La Jolla and be OK without a car.

Other than that, public transportation is pretty poor in San Diego, and things are so spread out I'm sure you would feel trapped in suburban hell rather quickly.

You would most definitely need a car in San Diego unless 95% of your activities etc. will stricltly
involve the downtown area only! No, the SD transit bus system is Not a good one. You can ride the light rail train (Trolley) from the downtown area to Old Town, several Malls and to the Mexican border, however, getting to the beaches would involve a bus transfer and a 45-50 minute ride! Not a huge downtown area in SD other than a few larger hotels, an decent 4 level shopping Mall along with the nearby Gaslamp and Seaport Village areas.

If you are living in San Diego itself then you don't need a car, the downtown area is concentrated and it has a decent public transportation system.
I dont think it is as concentrated as NYC or Chicago though.

Hope this helps.

Well yes & no. The city is not densely concentrated like that of many east coast cities. Rather it is a sprawling urban & suburban region which blends into the LA /Orange county area to the North. The good news is that public transit, bus, light rail & commuter rail works well in San Diego. The local buses known as MTS along with a recently expanded light rail network can get you just about anywhere. If your travels take you toward Orange or LA counties just use the Coaster commuter rail system to Oceanside and the Metrolink commuter rail from there which connects the entire 6 county southern California area. Don't pay attention to the west coast people who are largely afraid or otherwise unwilling to use buses and trains. Good Luck!
