We we just bought a 1960's house that has bates in the attic that have about had it. The bates have paper backing. Can we put blown in over the top of the bates. I'm hoping to DIY. Thanks for your help.

Should be able to --no problem. My brother and I did his like that and put in an extra 18 inches. Just make sure not to cover any vents on the eaves or install "vent chutes" to allow for air circulation in the attic.

Vapor barriers always go on the heated side of walls or ceilings. If you are going to add insulation to your attic and don't want to put in more blown in insulation ( which does have a better R-factor) then purchase unfaced fiberglass insulation to put on top of existing insulation. The thing you need to avoid is called double vapor barriers. Years ago when the first started playing with super insulated houses they would put a poly on the inside and outside of the walls. What happened is any moisture picked up in the walls going from summer to winter would get trapped in the walls and rot them out. No matter what only one vapor barrier on the heated side of the insulation!!! Then your house can breath and release moisture regardless how thick your walls or ceiling.

Mother in law had it blown it her place. Really made a difference in her utility bills. I see no reason that you can't do the same thing. Just be careful not to block the vents in the eaves. good luck to you, hope it works out.

My husband and I also did this to our house. Where ever you get your blown insulation they sometimes have the machines that you can use/rent to blow it in also. (FYI)
