an eclipse is supposed to happen on that day and that will really cause things to change. i don't recall what's important about this eclipse but it happens only a few thousand years. the mayans, i ching, and other prophecies all agree on this one day. what gives?

2012 is simply when the current baktun of the Mayan calendar ends. A baktun is a 400 year period, and we are in the twelfth baktun. It is true that the Mayan calendar effectively ends on December 21, 2012, because for whatever reason the Mayans didn't extend the calendar beyond the end of the twelfth baktun. This doesn't mean that the Mayans believed the world would end at that point. I mean, during the 20th century, the civilized world created a computer timekeeping system that was incapable of recognizing dates beyond December 31, 1999. It doesn't mean we thought the world was going to end that day! Maybe the Mayans would have extended the calendar centuries ago if their civilization hadn't collapsed. And even if the Mayans did believe the world would end in 2012, that doesn't mean it actually will. Remember, every predicted date for the end of the world so far has been wrong! In any event, the termination of the Mayan "long count" calendar on December 21, 2012, is the main reason why that year has been singled out as the supposed date of the apocalypse. There is no special astronomical event occuring on that date, aside from the regular old Winter Solstice.

The 2012 total solar eclipse is in November not December and it will be seen across northern Australia from Darwin to Cairns. It will be a good one lasting 4.5 minutes in some areas. The last total eclipse in Australia in Ceduna in December 2002 only lasted 31 seconds but it was worth travelling 3000km each way to see it.

There is no eclipse scheduled for December 2012. That is when the Mayan calendar runs out. Their calendars lasted a lot longer than mine, my current calendar runs out on 31 December 2007. I'll buy a new calendar for 2008. The Mayans would have provided a new calendar starting 22 December 2012 if there were any Mayans left to do it.

No. the reason that persons believe that the calendar ends on December 21, 2012 is by technique of the fact it extremely is while the calendar is going to it extremely is next cycle. think of of their calendar interior the words that we use. each 7 days, we finished a week. each fifty two weeks, we finished a 300 and sixty 5 days. each 10 years we finished a decade. each 10 an prolonged time a century. each 10 centuries a Millennium. With me so a good distance? properly the Mayan calandar is chop up into comparable cycles. In December, what's easily occurring is it extremely is finishing up a b'ak'tun, that's rather the equivalent of our Centuries. (distinctive time-length, yet you get the assumption.) The calendar does no longer end, it only starts off a sparkling cycle.

Milton- This is not the place to be spreading false rumors. If you have some specific information regarding an NEO asteroid, then tell all of us it's name and orbital period so we can track it. There are enough untruths regarding 2012 out there already without adding to it.

Joe-You are confused and misled on practically all of the information you have received regarding this subject. Our solar system will not be aligned with the galaxy in the year 2012. What this date reflects is a position in Earth's precessional wobble when the Earth reaches it's maximun of 60 degrees to the galactic plane. It is only an astronomical observation event. The changing of Earth's magnetic poles in completely unrelated to the solar pole reversals. Earth's last reversal was the Brunhes-Matuyama reversal 780,000 years ago. The magnetic pole in the northern hemisphere has migrated since it was first located in 1831. Drift results from the Dynamo effect. The inner daily chaos of the magnetohydrodynamics of the inner core. Rock and sediment core samples show that polarity reversals are characterized by a drop in the strength of the magnetic field. However, you seem to have overlooked the fact that a reversal is a process occuring over several thousands of years. Your claim of a reversal happening in one year (specifically 2012) is pure fiction. The 10% decline in Earth's magnetic field does not indicate an imminent pole reversal. The field increases and decreases all the time. Another fact which you have ignored is that today's magnetic field is twice as strong as the million year average of 4 x 1022amps x m2. Mayan astronomical calculations were made by nightly observations and the use of mathematics. Not, as you say, by meditation techniques. Finally, I deplore Joe's use of the words 'according to the Mayans'. His prophesies regarding violent sunspot activity, pole shifts, tsunamis, floods, a sudden influx of cosmic energy due to a magnetic field collapse, and pre 2012 wars are never spoken of by the Maya and are not in any way predicted in the Long-Count calendar. These are fictitious delusions made up from persons in the last 10 years to make money on their web sites. Take a look at what Joe offers as 'proof' for his statements. 2012 websites from New Age groups and Armegeddon propagandists whose doctrine is to promote fear and misinformation. More visitors to their website= more money for the webpage sponsors. They could care less about what is truth or fiction.

To answer the question, eclipses happen 2-5 times on Earth every year. In no way can an eclipse affect the Earth other than blocking out the sunlight under the eclipse area for about 7 minutes. Stay off of 2012 websites. The only credible author on this subject is John Major Jenkins. Read one of his books if you want truthful information.

Yes, and Joe Pardy's little bit of misinformation

The magnetic poles move all the time - even on a daily basis.

The magnetic poles have NOTHING to do with the axial poles. There have been times in history when the magnetic pole has been up to 50 degrees off from the axial pole. It is just fortunate in our age that it is near enough to the north pole to act as a guide via our compasses.

The axial pole has never significantly changed in 4 billion years.

Young readers, pick your answers wisely. There is so much garbage put out by ignorant people.

I believe there is a significant chance that we may experience a pole shift in 2012. Our sun is due for its 11 year cyclical pole shift, at that time. Due to the influence of a planetary alignment, also scheduled, at that time, our Earth may shift its poles too. NASA has already confirmed that the Earth's north magnetic pole has started to migrate to the South Atlantic. It has also detected a diminishing magnetic field that accompany pole shifts.

According to some Mayans, this date marks the end of the long count of their calendar; Set to end on a winter solstice (12-21-12). On this date, our Solar system will be center aligned , in the Milky Way's equator. Our sun will be centered in a position called "The Tree of Life", as it does every 25,800 years. In this position, unusually violent sun spot activity may cause a pole shift. Earthquakes, tsunamis, and floods will run ramped. Significant loss of life will occur. Earths magnetic field will temporarily collapse. Humans will be exposed to a cosmic energy that will facilitate enlightenment. If you would like to read about the Mayans and their predictions for the time, I have summarized them here:

Geologist Gregg Branden gave a lecture back in 1996. He spoke of how ancient traditions and beliefs, of the coming new age, can be explained in the language of modern science. He shows there may definitely be something to the Mayan predictions about a (pole shift) as well as life ending as we know it. In fact, he claims Earth's rotation as well as its magnetic field are already in a gradual deceleration and decline. Further, at its current rate, both should approach "Zero" on 12/21/2012. His lecture is kind of long (4 hours), but I found it very interesting.

i believe you ask of an event that is when the earth is between the sun and the super-massive black hole at the center of our galaxy; affecting the gravity and magnetic field of the earth. like our poles are gonna swap or something. i dont believe it will be strong enough for anything like that. our poles move anyway, slowly or faster at times. so i think its a little overblown. i could be wrong. but i dont think the gravity flux would be enough to change our world dynamically.

The world changes year by year.New Humans are born and old one die everyyear.
People believe things out of fears. WE cannot really predict the Future. We can undestand that man dies but we cannot predict who isgoing to be born in the future.
If a fortune teller was serious about the future he would be very rich out of the investement in the stock marked.

No that whole thing is a crock. Something about the Mayan calendar. I wouldn't put much faith in that bunch of heathens that wore bones through their noses and sacrificed live chickens and people.
