mostly, because it only has time to flip once before hitting the ground and since you're holding it with the butter side up or on the table with the butter up, it will land butter side down.

only if that's part of your belief system.
mine seems to fall either way if it does fall.
but if it does happen, it might have something to do with the fact that the buttered side is heavier and therefore tilts downwards when the bread falls.
