The best analogy for bandwidth is that if your internet connection is a highway, bandwidth is how many lanes the road has. So if you have a lot of bandwidth then you have a lot of lanes, which means you can be accessing a lot of content on the internet, or if you are a server then a lot of people can be accessing you a tthe same time. Excessive bandwidth usually refers to "you are using excessive bandwidth" which means that on the highway of your internet connection, you are controlling most the cars, thus other people on that connection don't get very many cars, and their connection is really slow.

If you are receiving a message about that from your ISP, you are transfering data faster than than your account is supposed to. Most accounts have a hidden limit on transfer speed. If you want to go faster than a home account, you are supposed to get a commercial account.

More than your processor can handle?
I've never experienced such a problem, but I have to admit I'm loving Verizon's FIOS service -- much nicer than their DSL.
