I was in your same situation. I was the first in my family to go to college. Don't be nervous about that. You're asking the right questions.
You can call the admissions office and discuss these things now, before you even apply. That's completely normal. In fact, if you can do an on-campus visit, you can take a tour and also speak with an admissions rep in person. Some schools will even hook you up with a student guide and let you see their dorm room.
You don't necessarily have to decide your major yet (you are in the US, right? Because that's not true if you're in the UK.) Still, you want to be sure that the school has most of the majors you might be interested in, to make your life easier once you get there. Talk to them about how easy it is to change majors, or enter a major once you enroll.

What I did as looked at the college catalog and than I e-mailed one of the advisor's. And I made my decision about what major I wanted.
I plan on becoming a 1st grade teacher. My advisor, Ken and I have a mentoring relationship. I talk to Ken a lot. I email him when i have questions. And he's always very helpful.
When you know your major talk to the instructor who is teaching your major. Talk to him or her and tell them what you are doing as far as your career. Tehy will help you with any questions you might have.
Also when you go and talk the your advisor get all the infomation you can about your major. Like the check-list you can get that from the admissions office.
I know at my college there are check-list right across from the admissions office.
I have been in college 1 year and I finally found my major.
Thats Elementary education.
So, Good luck

You need to apply first and get in the system, then talk to an advisor. They have to pull up your info and then they'll talk to you. They look at your past test scores and grades, the areas you excelled at in high school. They will discuss with you the plans for your future, your interests, and so on. College is awesome, I actually like it better. After you finish the core classes, you can study anything you want. It's alot freer than high school. Good luck and get good grades!

It sounds like you might want to do both. But most certainly after you apply.
Talking to them before might help you be more comfortable with the process.
Also, dont worry too much about the major before you get there. I just finished my freshman year, and i had NO idea what to major in. Most schools give you time--in my school, you don't have to declare a major until the end of your second year.
Good luck, and if you have any more questions, just let me know.

Talk to an advisor after you apply, but before you register for classes. Sometimes during registration, there might not be enough advisors or they don't even show up (that's what happened to me). Meeting with an advisor before registering would be a very good idea.

Usually you talk to an advisor after being admitted, but if you have a lot of questions, tell the people in admissions that you would like to talk to someone about these things. They should be able to put you in touch with someone who can give you some initial help.

You can do either. It may be easier to meet with them, though, if you are already accepted to the university.
