Not too early at all! I start getting them at 20 weeks.
You are describing perfectly a Braxton-Hicks contraction. The uterus tightens and hardens and then relaxes after a while. Later in your pregnancy, they might get more uncomfortable, even a little painful, but it's perfectly normal and your uterus is toning up for labor.
If you are getting a lot and they are bothering you, having a glass of water and resting can make them stop for a while and give you a break.

Yes, that sure is Braxton Hicks... Without a doubt. Are you staying really hydrated? Not that it's too early for BH, it most definitely is not too early! However, I started having them at about 24 weeks and asked my OB. She explained that dehydration brings them on in droves. So, I was ordered to drink a gallon (yes a gallon) of water a day! I live in Las Vegas so it is really hot here! I started drinking and now I very rarely get them at all! Also, she told me that unless I am having them rhythmically or more then 5 in an hour not to worry that it's ok.
Very Best Wishes!

Either Braxton-Hicks or it's just the baby moving. More than likely it's the baby, since contractions don't cause your tummy to move into "funny shapes".
Look at this vid of a baby making her tummy move into crazy contorted shapes: http://myspacetv.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=1466379

Hey Hun...that is is definately Braxton Hicks! Doesn't it feel so WEIRD???!!!! Yep your body is getting ready for when its time for the real contractions....mine happened all the time. It will be become a little more frequent as time goes on. Then one day its gonna hurt just a little...then after a while you'll feel the punch in them and realize you're in labor! Good luck!

It sounds like braxton hicks contractions, and that is very normal. I had them on and off all the time 7 months on. Unless they start to hurt, or you notice spotting I would contact your doctor.

I could be braxton hicks but it also might just be that your baby is moving into different positions
