I was told you should shut it off AND unplug your CPU simultaneously everyday before going to work to prevent hackers. Even if it is "shut off" or in "standby" mode, hackers can still read your hard drive and mess with it - Is this true?

Its usually best to shut down your computer. Even in standby mode it still draws power. Help the environment a little :)

as for hackers if you have a good fire wall adn virus blocker installed you have no need to worry. Unpluging its going ot do nothing though hackers can't start you rpc when its shut down only when its in standby or hibernating, so you should shut it down if your worried.

I keep mine on in non-standby mode every day -- just switch off the monitor.

No they can't mess with it when its off. However they can mess with it whenever its on and sometimes you might not even know that you are hacked.
