Well, seeing how they've been recording now for close to 30 years, have more Grammy awards than any other rock band, have sold over $150 million in albums and are probably the most successful live band around, I don't think your opinion on them makes a damn bit of difference.
U2 succeeds by actually looking as if they mean what they say. It's one thing to hear rock singers getting political or spiritual and then they're kicked off a plane for being intoxicated. Bono's kept his image up by getting involved in charities rather than just talking about making the world a better place. And although that idealism seems to have died out years ago, a lot of people are really turned on by it... myself included. I'd rather listen to Bono preach than hear Eminem talk about killing his wife any day.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and bet U2 has been around a lot longer than you have been alive. I have been a fan of theirs since Joshua Tree came out in 1987. U2 has always done there own thing and have been really good about reinventing themselves and still making original music. They are the only band I know of that has stayed together for 20 plus years without one single line up change. There are many other reasons i could list of why I think U2 is great, but if it's not your kind of music your not gonna dig it. All I can say is watch a copy of "Under a Blood Red Sky" and see U2 at their live best before you completely rule them out. Also keep in mind as far as how popular U2 really are they have replaced potatoes as Ireland's number one export.

Bit of both really. They started out as a lighter, more accessible version of bands like Joy Division and Echo & The Bunnymen. They were okay, but never as good as their contemporaries. Then they went to America and got massive and produced some really awful stadium rock in the process. "Where the streets have no name" is a TERRIBLE song on every level and Rattle and Hum is a dismal, ideas-free album.
Then they suddenly got really good and adventurous with Achtung Baby and Zooropa. For once in their careers they were actually ahead of the pack and they put some genuinely interesting stuff onto the radio.
Nowadays they've pretty much gone back to their early sound and are merely okay again.

Unimaginative is the key word. They make safe rock music for people who are afraid of innovation. They sound generic without sounding like anyone else, but then again I don't listen to bands who produce the sort of drudging rock they do. I'll concede that Achtung, Baby is a great album because they actually went out on a limb a little.

I'd say that they're neither great nor crap, just an average band that are really, really overrated. They've definitely got some great songs though, but that doesn't automatically make them a great band, like most people seem to think.

Music is all about what you like and you cant always explain why you like it, thats music! I love U2, their music appeals to me greatly and I dont have an explanation for it. I'm 55 years old and I like all kinds of music, except rap, I hate that. Get someone to explain the rap attraction. I'd like to know that one myself!

They aren't that great to be honest. The reason for their popularity is that the riffs (whilst very simple) are unbelievably catchy and anthemic leading to massive devoted crouds going crazy at every concert they play.
I mean Beautifull Day is hardly the work of a genius is it? But it's instantly recognisable and very uplifting.

Occassionally brilliant but a lot of dross there.
Adam Clayton (bass) has got the best job in the world 'cause he's paid millions to recite the same bassline on about 80% of their songs and a variation on the other 20%.
