These are the places that allow you diversity in plant selection, if you work with nature rather than against it. Even within a small area, there can be large differences in conditions. Look for features within your garden that cause changes in its microclimate, and create variations. When you discover those perpetually damp spots that never dries out or a constantly sunny spot, hunt for plants with habitats similar to your own garden for lower maintenance and success at survival. Even failures at growing something in an area will help you to discover how microclimates affect your success with your choice of plants.

That low wet spot will be perfect for a plant like Queen of the Prairie (Filipendula purpurea). The sunny dry dusty spot may be perfect for Russian Sage or Lavender. You'll find there's a "perfect" plant for every spot, it's just a matter of matching up the right plant to the right spot.
Good luck! Hope this helps.
