This can be tricky. If the garage is unheated and likely to freeze it's can be helpful to use exterior products, though I personally don't think it's necessary and in some case can be harmful. Exterior paint doesn't disappate the way that interior paint does, it requires more open air to disappate. Which means you could be smelling the paint fumes for a long time!
The best primer over fresh drywall is called PVA (Poly Vinyl Acyrlic) primer. Several companies make a version, Sheetrock being a commonly known one. It will seal the drywall and is less expensive than standard primers because it doesn't have the additives to make it stick to any surface.
Go to any paint or hardware store and ask for PVA primer, they should know what you mean. If they don't, don't buy anything from them or take their advice! :-)

Taping and finishing drywall takes at least three coats; one for bedding tape, second for floating and leveling joints, third for making surface smooth. Sometimes there are areas that take aditional coats, like where a door or window has been removed, or where new work and old work meet. Then prime/seal; if your drywall has been up long enough to be yellowish or brown, you will need to use a primer sealer that blocks stains as the yellowing effect will come through latex paint. When painting over the primer make sure the first coat is a good even coat, even though when it dries it may look uneven as to color. The second coat of paint is the color leveling coat, use a back roll to even out the textured effect of the paint. Interior paint is perfectly okay, if you need some cleaning durability use one of the latex enamel sheens. Most these days are using eggshell finishes.

Hi,you do need to prime with a drywall primer first . You can buy ,Glidden Brand Drywall primer.Glidden is a good paint, and just about everyone sells it. Then, if it where me, I would paint with a Semi-Gloss,(and some folks might disagree) Exterior paint. The only reason I suggest exterior is because, if like my garage, it is open most of the time and is one of the busiest areas of the house. Exterior is a very durable paint ,that holds up to the elements of being exposed, not to mention all the projects. But you can use a interior satin, gloss, or semi-gloss. Those are all good durable paints. Their just not as durable. Hope this helps, Bye

Finish the taping first let it dry well and sand. Dry wall is a paper and gypsum product it should be coated with a good primer/sealer product because water could ruin it. Sherwin Williams or any good paint dealer can reccomend the specific primer/sealer. As far as the paint I like to use what they call egg shell as opposed to flat from any store that sells paint. Why?? it can be lightly washed and it looks better. I have painted for a lot of years.

Primer always goes on first then the paint.
In a garage outside I would use exterior paint unless it is completely covered then interior paint should work OK. Me personally, I have never used primer of any kind I just slather on the regular latex paint.

AFTER you finish taping and sanding, use an interior primer. 1 coat should do. When dry apply the paint. (If you want textured walls, apply the texture before the primer.)

I usually use Kilz as a primer. It is thicker than regular paint. I have found when using this, it takes less of the top coat. Personally, since it is a garage and will be exposed to heat fluctuations, etc. I think I would use exterior paint. Good Luck!

Go to Home Depot and ask for Contractor paint, it's usually the cheaper grade that contractors like me buy for the primer. It usually goes for about $35.00 for five gallons, then you can put whatever you want over that, it's good enough for a garage. They can even tint it for you.
By the way, finish taping, then sand and paint.

Do you have a Home Depot near you? They have the best paint and the people who work in their paint dept. are quite knowledgeable.
