Only those who live in NO think the rest of us should pay to rebuild. Funny, when I got wiped out in Ivan no one cared. Something to do with special interest groups and being the wrong color? Call me a racist, but it strikes me that if it walks like a duck and talks like a duck... The "refugees" that came here post Katrina, were ungrateful as all get out and left piles of trash and graffiti everywhere.

Odd, you asked this- National Geographic has a very interesting article in it's magazine this month about how rebuilding in certain areas is just a recipe for disaster.
I have posted a link to the article on line- but the magazine had some very cool maps and graphics outlining the challenges in keeping an area that sits below sea level in a flood plain safe for habitation.

No, anytime you have land that is below sea level and people want to build homes and commercial buildings is a recipe for disaster. Unfortunately, people are using this as a political campaign and are neglecting to consider the possibilities of a recurrence of Katrina.
The government should not be supporting such reconstruction because it means that they are going to have to take responsibility for any future natural disaster that will result in more staggering costs for rebuilding. They should just call it the city of Atlantis and hope divers set up shop in the future to give tours.

Because if you don't stubbornly rebuild in a flood zone, you will be called racist.
BTW, I love the rich idiots in the Laguna Beach (California) vicinity that build on the hillsides...knowing that one day the house will slide down the hill. This group is just as stupid/stubborn. With that stated...I shouldn't be called names :)

New Orleans doesn't need to be rebuilt, the city is fine. Why does everyone seem to think an atomic bomb went off or something? Except for a few projects that remain unoccupied the city is up and running. If more of the lazy people around here would get a job instead of asking for hand outs there wouldn't be any problems at all down here.

Its a waste of money to rebuild it. Its going to flood again and the city has half the people now as it did before. Its going to cost a ton of money for half the people to pay for roads, schools, police, etc for the original sized city.

Only an idiot would build in a flood plain.
So yes they will rebuild it and with our tax dollars no doubt.

I think that should be left up to the property owners and their insurance company and investors. The Government should only help with the infrastructure.

If the country can build a vehicle that can go in and out of our atmosphere and not burst into flames more than they have; due to the thousands of degrees it encounters going to and fro. I do believe they can build protective devices in New Orleans, to keep it from getting flooded.
