What did they typically comprise of in terms of various fighting components?

The II SS Panzer Corps at the 3rd Battle of Kharkov and Kursk was composed of the 'classic' SS Divisions, LAH, Das Reich, Totenkopf; also attached was the independent 502nd Heavy Tank Battalion, while the 9th and 10th SS Divisions were assigned to the II SS Panzer Corps during Normandy and Operation Market Garden battles later in the war. The divisions and battalions didn't always stay with the corps, but were reassigned throughout the course of the war.

This gives you an idea of what a Corps was composed of....hodgepodge of divisions and battalions.

And why not? Any army has several types of units. Lighter ones are capable of fast attack (paratroopers being the extreme case), heavier ones, of mounting harder-to-break defenses...

This is the normal situation in any army.
It makes the administration and direction of large numbers of men easier.
