ok your going to get a better answer from the other retards who answered this.

String bass...also known as a violin bass or double has four strings. The notes are played with different fingers and different positions.

Bass guitar...yes the same as a string bass. The frets are the individual notes. They have the same strings, the only difference is the way its held and you cant use a bow on a bass guitar.

Hope ive helped. I pay violin, and bass guitar so i actually know what im talking about.

No.

Supplement to answers provided already:

Both instruments can be either acoustic or electronically amplified

Bass guitars TEND to be solid-bodied, while string basses are hollow-bodied

They are tuned the same, and either can play any bass part

The bass guitar is played while in a horizontal position (lie a guitar), while a string bass is played vertically (thus, "upright" or "stand-up" bass)

One might even go so far as to say they are just like the difference between an acoustic (real) piano and an electronic piano (keyboard)

It's got the same sound except most bass guitars are electrics. There are some really great rockabilly bands who have stand up bass players like Horrorpops, Nekromantix and Tiger Army. Horrorpops is the best, there's nothing sexier then a strong hot girl playing the stand up bass

I think that a string bass is the kind that is played up upright, and is in the same family as the violin, viola, cello, etc.
I believe it is usually made predominantly of wood, and can be played with a bow or plucked.
Here is what came up for "what is a string bass?" asked on ask.com, hope this helps:
