take your watch and an obect to cast a shadow.

Align the hour hand with the shadow and noon should point north. You have north. Proceed in the direction of land.

at night the north star is usually the brightest star and it never moves and it is the north. You should be able to find west which would be to the left 90 degrees, east is rght 90 degrees and south is the opposite direction from it. Just know what direction you came from and next time bring a compass and a map.

If you have a good watch with hands and not a LED readout you can use the watch to find North. I not remember as I have not done this in a long time. But, it something to search around for to learn.

Do what people have done for thousands of years, use a map and the sky. With a sextant you can be very accurate, as long as you're not moving too fast. But that requires you to know basically where you are. If you have no idea where you are, I think it's a little tough.

Follow the stars like Columus or the Vikings, or look for birds and see what direction they fly. If all else fails, sink the boat. There is land under the water.
