Perhaps we're not as stupid as we think!

Ignorance is bliss doesn't mean that we can choose to be completely ignorant of everything and be happy. Example, take a look at a mentally handicapped child as compare to a child the same age with no disabilities. The disabled child is usually happier even though they may not have the same opportunities or abilities. It's kind of like saying you can't crave what you've never had. How often would you be hungry for a food that you really love if you had never tasted it. If we don't know what we are missing, we are ignorant of it, so in a sense, ignorance is bliss.

Ignorance is not bliss. One can be conscious of his ignorance and question himself. Thus, ignorance is a subject of concern to reach knowledge. Complete ignorance only is bliss, but it is a postulate that does not exist. Fish may be ignorant and happy.
I make a distinction between complete passive ignorance, and active ignorance, like in "to ignore" something; which turns your question in a different way.

because the government is no longer content with blissful people and is forcing people to stay in education until 18 yrs of age and because if we weren't ignorant of what our children were getting up to we'd be saved alot of heart ache. ignorant is bliss...its just that if we stay ignorant we'd cause ourselves so much more misery, so we have to know if that rumour about thingy was true. we have to know things. only now we know too much yet our not content with knowing little. as long as people keep smiling i'll leave them to their ignorance so smile =D

good question. It is a type of bliss at least they don't realize they are suffering as much as others who are not so ignorant. Those who don't realize their true highest self are all in ignorance. Their so called happiness is an illusion. (Maya) For those who would like to understand their true identity beyond all illusion Bhakti yoga is the process of self realization. I love it. For info Read Bhagavad Gita as it is by Bhaktivedanta Prabhupada asitis.com you can read it on line.

Because religion came along and said that all the fun things were sins, and the ignorant fell for It, thus they are unhappy. By contrast, the wise should be happy, knowing that they can have fun, but they are burdened by thier wisdom. its a loose - loose situation.

It is not bliss generally. You have misquoted. It should read:"Where ignorance is bliss, it is folly to be wise".
