It's a private corporation, not a federal or state agency. Freedom of speech means the gummint can't censor. The private sector can.

Yep, simple fact is we don't have freedom of speech or thought. We like to point our fingers overseas and blame other countries of being oppressive but we don't see the junk in our own backyards.
Thing is, we think if someone's feelings get hurt, (and by "someone" I mean whoever happens to be under the political umbrella at the time), then it is not covered by the constitution. If I don't like you because of any reason then that's my business not the governments.
We shouldn't have to hire people we don't want, we shouldn't have to be afraid to say what we want... but we are.
But, hey, that's why I'm voting for Ron Paul. Freedom is a good thing. We have to stop being afraid of it or we're gonna lose it completely.
Yahoo being a privately own company can decide whatever it likes but it shows negatively on them when they censor politically incorrect speech. Basically we are being told what we can and cannot think. That's just wrong.

Yes, and some people are just reporting to be petty, Like one time I was showing my new avatar, and someone reported that, I mean its just a Chinese woman, I love chinese women....
Yeah but I think the main reason for censoring and junk is sometimes what people say is not for kids. And youtube should not be aloud to have comments, Some of the things the people say is just NASTY...

I worked for the legal dept. of a major newspaper and was asked this question often. The answer is that there is a difference between free and paid speech. We have free speech in public forums. This is not a public forum it is a paid forum. We are paying to use Yahoo (the internet) and they can have standards of ethics and rules of participation.

There are people from all over the world, all different races, all ages on this site.
But there are certain people that use this site to spread hate, racism, and sexism.
There are people who use vulgar, sexual, pornographic language, and pics.
There are underage people that come to this site, that don't need to read all that crap.
Some folks don't have respect for others.
They don't care if they hurt people.
They don't have any morals or class.
So someone has to step up and get rid of the trash.
It gets on my nerves to see Avatars that are private body parts, or KKK hoods.
I'm trying to help people, and just to have fun.
These people spoil the mood for everyone.

Amen. They allow you to turn off filters in chat rooms, they should allow you the same courtesy here. Sucks a bunch. And it really aggrivates me when people go there are kids on here. A) kids aren't allowed on here by yahoo rules and b) I think we should trust the parents to raise the kids. I'm not going to censor myself just so a kid doesn't learn a dirty word.

You have freedom of speech here on Yahoo Answers but they have certain rules. If you don't like these rules, you have the freedom to find another forum that has different ones.

I believe that you are correct about Yahoo censors. They should not be aloud to delete or erase questions and answers. But the only way anything should be deleted is by the people who wrote them.

Yahoo owns the board so they can censure what they wish. Just like if someone with kids asked you not to say certain things in front of them. You can not respect that, but they will probably throw you out of there house.

Americans have freedom to speak their minds. But Yahoo, as owner of the domain, has the right to decide what it considers "offensive". It's a private domain - not public - it doesn't cost you anything, so it wouldn't hurt you to respect their rules.
