firstly they secure the release of 9 terrorist from guantanamo who were british citizens, and let them come home and live among us and to do god knows what.now they want to secure the release of 5 more who dont even have british passports.seems to me its a case of lets let as many pottentiol terrorists in to cause as much carnage as possible.can someone tell me why.LONDON (Reuters) - The government asked the United States on Tuesday to release five British residents from Guantanamo Bay in a change of policy that may signal Prime Minister Gordon Brown is taking a more independent stance from Washington.

Foreign Secretary David Miliband sent a formal request to U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice for the release of the five men, who were legally resident in Britain before their detention but are not British nationals.

The decision marks a shift from the policy of former Prime Minister Tony Blair's government, which secured the release of all nine British citizens held at the U.S. prison camp in Cuba but maintained it was not responsible for detainees of other nationalities who had simply lived in Britain

The government has not gone mad, it has woke up to its responsibilities.
Those held at Guantanamo Bay have not been charged or tried for their alleged crimes. There has been growing unease, even in America, about the legality of the place. The moves to get those held out of Guantanamo Bay are in response to this unease. It may also be in response to the possibility of legal action by those who have been or are detained. As British citizens who have not been convicted of any crime they should be afforded every possible assistance by the British gvernment. In my view the government has a duty to help those who were legally resident too.

The law must apply in all circumstances to all people. Guantanamo Bay is an outrage and should be condemned by all reasonable people. Everyone, and I do mean everyone, has the right to a fair trial in front of a jury.

tomsp 10, I couldn't agree more.

You and others seem to forget.Brown in managing the country's
finances for the past 10 years or so.Has been running the country. Now he can still(and will)control the finances and make
the laws with he's own yes Muppet's are in big trouble.I just
wonder why no one has tried a military take over.Because so
called politics in the country don't work.Unless your on the
financial parliamentary carousel.

It's a quaint idea I know but if I'm accused of something I'd like to be given the opportunity of proving my innocence before being banged up, chained up and treated worse than any animal would be allowed to be treated.

If the Yanks have got anything against the prisoners they've been torturing for the last 5 years let them produce it in court. If not let them go.

Get something right! No person in Guantanamo has been convicted of any crime whatsoever and therefore your tag of "terrorist" has no justification whatsoever. Guantanamo exists so that America can imprison people without sticking to their own much vaunted constitutional rights. How many White, Anglo-Saxon Protestants are there in Guantanamo? Imprisonment without a trial is against everything I believe in and I stand fully behind the British Government in their attemps to prevent any imprisonmemt of any British citizen without a full and fair trial.

I agree with FIREFOXY mostly , but i would say that the only reason for this is because Brown needs to separate himself from Blair's legacy by creating the image of separation from Bush's policies. 1st it was giving Bush the diplomatic equivalent of a slap in the face by only praising America and not Bush in their press conference and now supposedly standing up for peoples right regardless of their colour, race or religion. We may well withdraw our troops from Iraq soon before the next election but you can be sure that they will only be transferred to Afghanistan. So basically it is all about appearance to placate the large anti Bush contingent in the UK.

Guantanamo bay (GITMO) is americas shameful gulag.

people there have no rights. the americans will not allow them the status of POW's, because that would grant them certain rights under international law.
people have been rendered from GITMO to countries where they are subject to torture, and then sent back to GITMO.
an american child rapist and murderer has more rights than the people at GITMO. some of whom are there simply because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time

For example, last year they released Haji Nasrat Khan after 4 years WITHOUT ANY CHARGE.

Oh, by the way, Haji Nasrat Khan was somewhere between 71 and 78 years old, used a walking frame, and was partially deaf.

Have they been tried in a court of peers? No.

Have they been held in conditions abhorent to most? Yes.

Ever heard of innocent till proven guilty?

Saying that, I feel it is up to the countries they are from to press for their release. Not the UK.
