Has anyone done a postgrad recently, and what kind of skills did you gain or where you surprised was difficult? What skills should I buck up on before I embark on the postgrad degree?

I went back for a law degree at 41, and finished at 45. I was mostly worried if my memory would still be good enough to make it through; it was. I think the most difficult thing was putting myself into an appropriate student posture; I didn't want to be too presumptuous with the faculty, so as a result, I think that often I overcompensated and was more docile than I should have been. For the rest, the additional patience you gain with time comes in handy, and you should do fine.

In my experience, mature post grads do a lot better than people who have come straight up from undergrad, because they tend to have a better work ethic. I'm in the final year of my PhD now, and the last couple of years have mainly been data processing. This last couple of months I've been writing more and finding I'm a bit rusty on how to structure a paper, and my ability to write concisely has gone out of the window, so I'd find a good book on essay writing and grammar if I were you. Most uni libraries will have plenty. I swear by my old undergrad book "How to do your dissertation in geography and related disciplines" by Parsons and Knight, but this may not be so relevant for you, depending on what you are studying.

Most of all, enjoy it and good luck!

I went back for a MS at 55 and I joked that my idea of an all-nighter was going to bed at 10 pm. Memorization was a little tough, but few courses demanded it. Experience does trump youth. You're going to do great.
