For a lot of girls, it's just to feel special. To be one of a few, on the field, with everyone watching you. Some people live for that kind of attention.

At one time a lot of schools selected their teams via a popularity vote, so in essence the most 'it' girls were all gathered together there. I suspect that may have something to do with the placing of the activity on a pedestal. Nowadays people try out based on skill and potential, but the pedestal has remained.

For myself my love of cheer is about the performance and the challenge. I suspect that is the case for most cheerleaders. It's a real thrill get out there and do what we love. At games, not everyone is a fan of us, but at competition look out. Everyone there is diehard in love with the sport. :^)

As for not being popular in the UK, it is definitely growing. It might never reach the level here in the USA, but I think it might become pretty strong if the number of cheering clubs is any indicator: http://www.cheerleading.org.uk/handbook/mapuk.htm
